If you’re reading this, you may have heard the term “mastermind” around the online world before, but you might not be exactly sure what it means.
The term “mastermind” was created by Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich. In the book, he defines a mastermind as, “the coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people who work toward a definite purpose in the spirit of harmony.”
My simpler definition of a mastermind is this: a group of people who get together on a consistent basis to offer support, feedback, and new ideas that will help you progress from where you currently are.
Most people start or join a mastermind because:
- They feel alone as the boss of their own business
- They want friends who understand the #smallbizstruggle
- They want outside perspective to make sure their big ideas make sense
- They want to surround themselves with people who will inspire and motivate them
As you can see, joining a mastermind can be beneficial for countless reasons as a business owner. Let’s talk about how starting or joining one can really impact your brand.
1. You become who you surround yourself with.
You know that saying “you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with?” Well, if you start a mastermind group, you get to choose who you want to spend time with, listen to, and get impacted by.
From the inside, this will affect:
- The way you think
- The decisions you make
- The new people your co-members connect you to
From the outside, this will affect:
- Who others see you’re spending your time/associating with
- Which is a reflection of who you are, what you believe in, and what level of business you’re at
- How people perceive you
2. You’ll have a built-in filter.
If you’re an entrepreneur, it’s very likely that you don’t have a shortage of ideas. In fact, you probably have too many, all the time, which leaves you constantly feeling overwhelmed and flustered, never knowing which to work on. With a mastermind, your co-members will be the filter for all of your ideas. They’ll let you know if your ideas are on brand, if they make sense, or if they’re worth pursuing!
3. You have access to fresh ideas.
Simply put, two brains are better than one. Your co-members will see opportunities in your business that you could’ve never seen on your own. I’ve seen first-hand on multiple occasions how one idea from a mastermind member can change the entire course of your business (for the better).
4. You can expedite growth.
Imagine always having an answer to your biz questions. What would you be able to do? How fast would you be able to create, test, and implement? With the right mastermind, you’ll be able to fill in your knowledge gaps with what your co-members know. Which means you’ll be able to get much more done than if you were trying to figure out everything on your own.
5. You’ll be seen as an expert.
By being the person to bring a group of people together and start a mastermind, everyone in the group will automatically view you as a leader. Not only that, but they’ll tell others that they view you as a leader, which will only help your credibility no matter what industry you’re in.
If you couldn’t tell by now, I believe everyone should be in/start a mastermind (whether it’s a paid or peer one). No matter what stage of business you’re at, you can always use a dose of support, accountability, and feedback to continue to elevate your brand.
