My 3-step process to listen, trust, and do
Are you feeling confused or indecisive in your business? Are you feeling like something isn’t quite working?
You might be having thoughts like…
- “What offer do I create next?”
- “Is my message or my content resonating with my audience?”
- “How can I reach more people?”
- “Is it possible to create something that feels good for me and my audience?”
- “Should I start a blog, or a podcast, or a YouTube channel?”
As you build your business, it can be overwhelming to want to share your ideas and your voice with the world, while growing your revenue and doing what you’re good at.
Getting clear on your brand message, strategy, and plan are all first steps in showing up and creating offers that feel good and sell. But what about those times that you’re still feeling unsure, or you have a new idea that you’re not sure how to integrate?
It’s time to listen, trust, and do.
Here, you’ll find my three-step process to unlocking your next big idea.
TIME TO LISTEN AND BRAINSTORM IDEAS
One of the first things I’ve found is that business owners have ideas for their next big step in their business, but they think about them at times that aren’t really helping them think about them. Know what I mean?
You need a dedicated time to listen.
So that’s Step One:
Plan a week next month where you can block off time to have dedicated “listening.” Put it on your actual calendar now so that you don’t book something on those days.
Step Two:
Plan to be unplugged for at least 80% that week. This is not the week to start that new course you just bought. Don’t schedule any coffee chats. Try not to schedule client calls. I will stack my week prior to my “listening week” so that I have no calls. This is an essential part of the process!
By doing all of this, you are making the space you need to listen without interruption.
Step Three:
Plan out what you’re going to be “listening to.” Plan to keep social media off totally, keep the TV for sure, and don’t consume other people’s content. Then, ask yourself: What are you listening for? Is it the idea for a course rattling around your head? Is it your messaging you want to get clearer on? Or is it to decide if a podcast or YouTube channel is a good move? I even make a plan to start each day of my “listening week” with an intention for what I’ll be focusing on and brainstorming that day.
I don’t recommend having too many things to “listen to,” as this can muddy the waters and make your week more overwhelming than productive.
Got that all, my friend? OK now, it’s time for Phase Two.
TIME TO TRUST YOURSELF
Pretend we’re starting your “listening week” today. You’ve got an intention to focus on, you’re brainstorming ideas for your specific focus, and you’re getting clear on your idea. Does your gut tell you to start that podcast? To start sharing more of the personal story that helped you start your business?
Go with it! Phase Two is all about trusting yourself. I have found that we tend to rely on popping into Facebook groups, checking in with our besties on every little decision, but when is the last time you created something and committed to making it happen?
Now, I am not saying you don’t need your besties, your mastermind, or other resources. I am actually in favor of using all of those things to help you create something amazing. But I want you to be very clear on what you do want and be able to make your case to your coach or mastermind so that way you can get maximum feedback instead of wasting time getting feedback that doesn’t apply to what you want to do.
Now that we’re flexing those self-trust muscles, let’s talk about Phase Three.
TIME TO ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND DO THE WORK
This phase is pretty obvious: you’ve made space to listen and to get clear on your next big idea. And you’re trusting yourself to make it happen. Now, let’s make it happen! Yup, you heard me: You’re diving in!
I’ve found that, if you don’t start taking action during the week you’ve set aside for yourself, you’ll find 458 reasons why you can’t make it happen after the week is over. This is exactly how I developed my podcast, my course, my mastermind. It’s how I create the majority of my content.
In the last few days of my “listening week,” I usually start mapping out my plan to get the big thing done. It can’t always be done in one week, so then I look at my calendar and plan exact dates where I’ll be working on exact tasks that will eventually add up to the big thing.
For example, you can use your “listening” week to get clear on the idea for your course, map out the modules, and get your team ready for the project. Then, you can use the last couple of days assigning tasks, doing research on course platforms, and mapping out the plan to record modules over the next month or whatever your timeline is.
MAKE YOUR “LISTEN, TRUST, DO” WEEK A REGULAR THING
That’s it, y’all! That’s the whole 3-step process. I know how powerful it is because I use it myself, and I also use it with my brand strategy clients and mastermind members.
So, I recommend repeating this process every quarter, as well. I promise you will feel like a new person and be so much more inspired and clear on the action you are ready to take.
And to make it easy for you, I created a free planning guide that has the “Listen, Trust, Do” process on it that you can download for free.
